The Pioneer Valley Region's Private Practice Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) support members with all aspects of private practice, including administrative, marketing, legal, and clinical issues. In addition to focusing on practical matters such as billing, and insurance company policies, the committee also addresses how these concerns impact clinical work. By attending a meeting, NASW members can join the Private Practice Listserve.

Using the content of “Still Alice”, and the expertise of the discussant, the group will focus on issues facing people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Discussion will focus on the experience of people with Alzheimer’s disease, the impact of the disease on families, and coping mechanisms and social work interventions to enhance functioning.

Learning Objectives: (Participants will learn...)

1. How the experience of a diagnosis of Young Onset Dementia is different for the person, his/her family, community, and treatment team as compared to normal and late onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. About treatment options and coping skills that the main character employed to cope with the disease and consider additional interventions a social worker might offer.

3. How the diagnosis and the disease progression impact the family system.

4. At least two social work interventions that can be helpful to families with a member who has Alzheimer’s disease.

It is safe to say that most people have probably experienced Transition Saturation! BUT WHAT IS IT? In this workshop, we will explore the idea oftransition saturation as it relates to the elderly. We will examine external and internal signs of stress, fatigue and emotional depletion that often lead to total “system overload.” You may have said, “I have seen it and felt it, but not known what to call it!” You’re not alone. This presentation will identify strategies, solutions, and resource options.

Particular session focus is on transition vulnerability points and challenges for both the elderly and their caregivers. Participants will come away with practical knowledge, increased skills, and tools to help elderly clients, their family members, and themselves.

About the Presenter: As a consultant and trainer, Linda Maguire has developed and presented seminars and workshops on family changes, relocation and lifespan developmental challenges for all family members at Families In Global Transition (FIGT) conferences, Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) conferences, and for corporate family concerns.
